China Has Started Up the National Project on Wildlife Protection and Nature Reserves Construction

On Dec. 21,2001, the state forestry administration held the meeting of starting up the national project on wildlife protection and nature reserve construction. Zhou Shengxian, director of State Forestry Administration, said the State Development Planning Commission has approved a comprehensive plan for China's protection of wildlife and construction of nature reserves in the first half of the 21st century.
With the project working, more and more wildlife and eco-system will recover and develop further.
According to the plan, the project with three stages, lasts from 2001 to 2050 year. During the first 10 years, the goals are as follows:

  1. to rescue and breed Giant Panda, Crested Ibis, Tiger, Orchidaceous plants etc., 15 precious and rare species, make them begin to recover and develop,

  2. to make the number of nature reserves reach 1800, with 220 of those being national. The area of nature reserves reaches 155 million ha, up to 16% of the Chinese territory. Thereby, some typical ecosystems could be effectively conserved and the habitats of endangered species will be improved.

  3. to strengthen the protection to natural wetland.

  4. to establish some breeding bases of wildlife.

  5. To improve and enhance the construction of management, monitoring and research system.
By the year 2050, the plan says the number of the country's nature reserves will reach 2,500, with the area amounting to 172.8 million hectares and accounting for 18 percent of the country's total territory.
The populations of 85% of safeguard rare species, across the country, will recover and increase, to achieve a sustainable development of wildlife and plant resources.
